Welcome to the ARTS Scheme

Congratulations - by thinking about visiting an archive to obtain information, you have now reached a level of study where textbooks are no longer sufficient and primary source material has become an integral part of your work. This is a major step forward in your academic development, but can be a challenging and daunting proposition.

About Archives

An archive can mean either a collection of documents, or the place where those documents are stored. Either way, the traditional view of an archive is of inaccessible 'dusty old documents' presided over by dusty old men. In the modern archive, nothing could be further from the truth.

There is a wealth of information contained in the documents stored at archives, and over the last ten years much has been done to improve their profile, accessibility and range of users. Nevertheless, the largest obstacle that prevents people from using these resources is their fear of this unknown world.

The
ARTS scheme online

There are two sections to this website. The first is an online tutorial in five stages that provides the basic information you will need to get started at any archive, be it a national institution such as The National Archives, or a county record office. The second section contains brief profiles of five national institutions, with links to their websites.

The ARTS scheme onsite

An onsite course at your university is also available. It covers topics that cannot be easily addressed online, including a detailed demonstration of The National Archives's catalogues and worked examples of research at various other national institutions and relevant local county record offices. However this can only be booked for a group of students at one university, so you would need to ask your tutor or head of department to arrange this session. Details can be found on the tutor home page.

Online Tutorial

The ARTS online tutorial covers five areas, and are best viewed in sequence.

XX 1. Pre-research: locating archives
2. Planning your visit
3. Rules, regulations and document handling
4. Research techniques
5. Online archival research

Profiles of major UK Archives

The following are the main national institutions that you may need to visit. A brief profile of each is provided, with links to their websites.

Many local, county or specialist archives will be of equal, if not greater, relevance. Advice about contacting them is provided in the online tutorial. However, the National Register of Archives is as good a place as any at which to start - http://www.hmc.gov.uk.
