Visiting an archive for the first time can be a daunting prospect, especially if you found extracting information from the university library a challenge. This website offers guidance and advice on how to select the correct archive, navigate archival catalogues and prepare yourself for your first visit. There is also advice on Internet research, and profiles of the UK's major archival institutions.

The web site provides basic guidance for students from all disciplines and at any stage of their studies. However you can book an onsite tutorial at your university that gives a far greater depth of information, including a detailed introduction to The National Archives (the Public Record Office) and instruction on how to start research at county record offices and other national institutions. Guided visits to The National Archives can also be booked.
