General research advice, including information on
regional archives and a Q&A session (15 mins)
Total
time: 2 hours
Session
requirements
To host a session, you will need to provide a lecture
theatre or other such suitable room. There is no upper
limit on the number of students, although the total
number (and where possible a list of students' names
and their areas of interest) should be forwarded no
later than one week beforehand.
In
addition to the detailed introduction to The National Archives, reference
will be made (where possible) to regional archives or
institutions of national importance. Please submit a
list of institutions that you think that your students
will need to visit, and the session can be tailored
accordingly.
Booking
a session
To book a session, please contact
us or email your request to arts.scheme@virgin.net.
You will then be sent a booking form by return of email,
which you should fill in and return. Suitable dates
can be negotiated.
Cost
The cost of each session is £75. This covers delivery
of the session, preparation of training packs, and a
limited email enquiry service that is available to participating
students before the session (see below).
In
addition, any travel expenses incurred will be reclaimed.
A car will be used for all journeys of up to 2½
hours duration from London; thereafter, trains will
be used. It might be possible to arrange groups of sessions
at neighbouring universities in a particular region
so that travel costs are shared.
If demand for places is sufficient, it is possible to
book two sessions on a single day. The cost of the double
session is £125, plus expenses (as outlined above).
Students'
research topics
Once a session has been booked at your university, students
are encouraged to submit questions about their research
topics in advance via the arts.scheme@virgin.net
email address. They will then be emailed a form requesting
their name, address, course, tutor, university and the
date of the session they are booked on, plus details
of their research topic.
Whilst
it is not possible to give detailed responses to every
topic, some will be used in the Q&A session as worked
examples; and each email query will receive basic guidance
within 3 days of receipt about where to begin research.
