Below are the main national institutions that you may need to visit. Click on the tabs to view a brief profile of each with links to their websites.

Many local, county or specialist archives will be of equal, if not greater, relevance. Advice about contacting them is provided in the online tutorial but the National Register of Archives is a good place to start -

Getting There Travelling by Car

Travelling from the North
On the A487 from Machynlleth, come down Penglais Hill passing the Arts Centre and the new University campus on your left. The National Library of Wales is on the left hand side immediately after Pantycelyn Hall of Residence. The Library is at the end of a 400 metre drive, overlooking Aberystwyth.

Travelling from Mid Wales
Along the A44 from Llangurig you will come to a set of traffic lights in Llanbadarn Fawr. Bear left at the lights and then, almost immediately, turn right towards Aberystwyth along the residential road, Llanbadarn Rd, passing Plascrug Leisure Centre on your left. At the end of Llanbadarn Rd at the junction with the Cwps Public House, turn right up Penglais Hill. After passing the entrance to Bronglais Hospital, turn right at the post box. The Library is at the end of a 400 metre drive overlooking Aberystwyth.

Travelling from the South
Along the A487 from Aberaeron you will come to a roundabout in Penparcau. Turn right to come down Pen y Bont Hill. At the bottom of the hill you will approach another roundabout next to the retail developments at Parc y Llyn. Take the third turning off, signposted Llanbadarn Fawr. Before entering the village of Llanbadarn Fawr, turn left along Llanbadarn Rd, passing Plascrug Leisure Centre on your left. At the end of Llanbadarn Rd at the junction with the Cwps Public House, turn right up Penglais Hill. After passing the entrance to Bronglais Hospital, turn right at the post box. The Library is at the end of a 400
metre drive overlooking Aberystwyth.

Parking
Visitors are asked to park at the side car park of the Library. Coach parties should contact the Library beforehand. For more information: 01970 632800

Travelling by Train
Aberystwyth train station is located in the centre of the town, a fifteen-minute walk to the Library or a short journey by taxi (located outside). Train services to Aberystwyth arrive from Shrewsbury every two hours. For a timetable contact http://www.nationalrail.co.uk

Travelling by Bus
The Bus Station is located next to the train station. There are various local connections and connections to Birmingham and London. Visitors wishing to travel from Cardiff in south Wales or Bangor in the north should catch the Traws Cambria service which arrives at Aberystwyth daily. Disabled Visitors
There is convenient disabled parking and an entrance at the side of the National Library, but it is worth phoning before hand. Please contact the Marketing Unit on 01970 632834 or the Porters on 01970 632960.

Opening Hours

The Reading Rooms are open as follows:
Monday - Friday 9.30-6.00
Saturday 9.30-5.00

Only a restricted service is available on Saturdays. If you wish to consult a restricted access manuscript on a Saturday, please request permission to do so in writing prior to your visit so that your request can be considered and the form of authorization duly completed by the appropriate member of staff.

The Library is closed every Sunday.

Public Holidays - whilst services to readers are closed on Public Holidays, the Exhibitions, Shop and Pen Dinas restaurant may be open on some of these days, especially during the summer months. Please check for details.

How to obtain a Reader's Ticket

If you wish to gain access to the Reading Rooms to consult the Library's collections, you must have a valid reader's ticket. Each ticket is issued subject to the regulations currently in force and is valid for all of the Library's Reading Rooms. Tickets may be issued to applicants aged 16 or over. In signing the application for a reader's ticket, you will testify that you have read and understood the Policy on Access / Our expectations of readers. Tickets are issued for five years and are renewable. To apply for a ticket, print and complete the form Application for a 5-year Reader's Ticket. Bring the completed application with you when you visit the Library, and take it to the reception counter on the main floor, where the ticket will be processed. You must bring with you *two* proofs of identity, one of them showing your current address. No ticket can be issued without adequate proof of identity being given. You will need two passport size photographs with your application, one to be placed on your ticket and the other to be kept by the Library for security purposes. You may bring photographs with you or have them taken at the Library.

Working in the Library

To see the collections you must go to the appropriate Reading Room:

North Reading Room
Books, periodicals and original newspapers

South Reading Room
Manuscripts, archives, rare books, maps, photographs, and microforms

National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales viewing room
Sound and moving image material

The Reading Rooms contain reference material on open shelves to assist you in your research. You will also be given guidance as to how to order material in each Reading Room.

Library Restaurant

The Library's new restaurant, Pen Dinas, is situated on the ground floor at the south-west corner of the Library. Follow the signs from the Central Hall which will guide you downstairs to Pen Dinas. The new ground floor entrance also leads visitors directly to Pen Dinas restaurant. The restaurant offers a wide selection of light meals, drinks and sweets as well as hot meals, including vegetarian choices, which are changed
daily. Prices at the restaurant are very competitive. Only light snacks and salads are usually available on Saturdays.

Collections 4 million printed books; manuscripts from private individuals, families and landed estates; archives covering public records, industrial, manorial, ecclesiastical, political and local sources.
 
References & Catalogues Varied depending on the catalogue. Some material transferred from The National Archives will have TNA references, others will be from private catalogues.
Catalogues in the search room; card indexes available.
Online access to some collections available.
Databases and CD Roms for other parts of the collection are onsite.

Research Notes The NLW is quite a distance from the centre of Aberystwyth, on top of a steep hill - so make sure that you have all that you require with you for the day, though supplies can be purchased from the shop.
As with all major archives, the collections are extensive so take time to familiarise yourself.
The staff speak Welsh and English; the majority of the catalogues are in English; be prepared to find documents in Welsh, English or (pre-1732) Latin.
Remember to contact the archive in advance to book a seat, if you wish to view archival material.
