Profiles of major UK archives

Below are the main national institutions that you may need to visit. Click on the tabs to view a brief profile of each with links to their websites.

Many local, county or specialist archives will be of equal, if not greater, relevance. Advice about contacting them is provided in the online tutorial but the National Register of Archives is a good place to start -

Travel Links GRH within walking distance from Edinburgh central station (2 mins); WRH a further 20 mins walk away.
Various bus links available to Princes Street.
Road: not advised, limited parking in central Edinburgh, none at archive.
 
Opening Hours M-F: 09.00 - 16.45 (last orders 16:20)
No need to book in advance.
GRH closed for stocktaking 1st 2 weeks in November, WRH closed for stocktaking 3rd week in November
 
Entry Requirements 1 proof of ID required (GB bankers card, passport or GB drivers licence).
Signed declaration to observe rules and regulations.
Ticket valid 3 years.
 
Archive Layout GRH
Ground floor: reception, cloakroom
First floor: search room, document reading room, microfilm room.
WRH
First floor: search room, reading room.
 
Facilities No café onsite, but plenty of sandwich bars and restaurants within easy walking distance.
 
Collections Repository for public and legal records of Scotland from 12th century to present day; 65 km of records; deposited private papers (very wide collection).
 
References & Catalogues Official sources: combination of series codes [letter(s)], series numbers and piece numbers for official sources; other reference systems for private deposits.
Large array of catalogues available; some central indexes but orientation can be difficult.
Start with the summary catalogue and indexes, these lead to specific catalogues.
Some card indexes available, with parts of the collection searchable via computer terminals.
 
Document Ordering Find a seat in the reading room.
Slips to be filled in manually and handed to production desk (with readers ticket); name, date, document reference and seat number required.
Documents delivered to seat within 30 mins;
Advance orders possible if full document reference known.
 
Research Notes Useful series of online information sheets, essential reading before starting research.
Make sure that you know which archive you will be researching at (GRH or WRH); also check that no records are at TTH.
Catalogues can be confusing as there are a vast array from which to chose; work through the summary catalogue first, and ask at the desk.
